Examination of hair structure

Hair follicle: the path where the hair root grows.

Hair root: the part that is under the skin

Hair shaft: placed outside the skin and visible to the eye.

The hair shaft also consists of three layers:

A) The lower layer, called the medulla, is present only in thick hair.

b) The middle layer is called the cortex, which determines the strength, color and condition of the hair.

c) The outer layer, which is called the cuticle, is thin, colorless, and its role is to protect the melanin-containing layer and the cortex.
